On the nod…

We’ve all been pretty hopped up on cyclocross and coffee around here lately.

Lots of hemming and hawing about things like “plating, coating and polishing”, Dickies V. Redcap and grind coarseness for french press usage too. Vigorous debate is healthy.
Jamie managed to crash on the first lap in Northampton on Sunday and I think it may have actually improved his spelling. jimbo.jpg I made him wear protective head gear for the rest of the day to avoid any further trauma.

On a recent trip down to NY I stopped by the old Spooky shop. Looks a lot cleaner now, needs to be I suppose, it’s a medical devices warehouse now.

While i was there I took a walk down to the old trails. It was kind of sad seeing an abandoned set of dirtjumps. They are the kind of things that should be plowed by the man in a blaze of glory, not just slowly eroded by nature. The only comfort seeing those trails provided was realizing what happened to all the people who used to be regulars there… All of them are still riding, still digging and still making things happen.

They are big figures at little bike companies, little figures in Big Media, and short dudes in big sky country.

How do trails just fade away?

The first thing that happened is that Spooky closed up in 2000. Shortly after that the kids who were locals started graduating and moving away…. Then It turned into a hobo encampment, Hooverville style. After enough drunks burnt to death in their tents the cops came down pretty heavy on the area. The county clear cut the brush and moved some earth in an effort to improve site-lines and make their job easier. The trails survived though. A sort of progressive tax on the dividends of sweat equity I suppose.

Wow, welcome back some memories here. Been a long time since I’ve seen this. So when are we going to see some frames for playing in the trails. I’m to out of shape for cyclo, least for a year or two I would like to hit the jumps in my new yard.
